Two of my passions are writing and yoga. I've been doing both for a number of years. Both interests had beginnings in a simple personal practice. Practices for my own enjoyment and well being. My yoga practice has continued to grow and expand to include teaching.
I never intended to become a yoga teacher. I originally came to yoga to find peace in my life and in my mind. Although those simple goals are still very much a daily practice for me, I found so much more. I found a community, a home away from home, friends, belonging, fitness, and also a desire to learn. A teacher training seemed the natural next step to deepen my personal practice. When I began my first teacher training, a 200 hour vinyasa style flow yoga training, I had no desire to teach. The training required numerous teaching hours to complete so I told myself I simply wouldn't finish the training. Instead I'd do all the good stuff I wanted to deepen my practice and simply skip the teaching portion, after all it was just a piece of paper that I didn't even care to have. Although by the time I actually reached the teaching portion of the training I decided to go ahead and complete the full 200 hours, partly out of a sense of finishing something I'd began but also out of peer pressure ... or rather peer encouragement. It had been a difficult journey and I'd made new friends which I trusted and I really wanted to be able to say to myself, "I did it!". After all, completing the full training didn't require I ever use it to teach an actual yoga class ... to students. Yet something had changed in me during the training, a new confidence, a new sense of interest and exploration. When I finally received my certificate, it came with an intriguing attachment: an offer to teach a regular class at the studio. I was honored and extremely surprised, but I also found myself more than a little curious and excited for the opportunity. There it started, one class grew to two and so on, and I've been teaching ever since.
With this web site, my hope is to bring my writing through the same journey from personal practice to a public one, that my yoga has already started. I have no idea where it will lead, perhaps nowhere, but I felt ready to take a step forward. Putting together this page felt like that step to me. An opportunity to combine two of the interests that make me who I am. Yoga has taught me to embrace who I am, and this is another step on that road. A chance to grow and deepen both practices and a new way for others to join me on my journey.
